Lyrics

The Coo-ee March – © Patrick Evans 2015
From Gilgandra down to Bathurst town,
The boys all heard the Coo-ee sound
They left the farm, the smithy’s shop
The auction rooms fell silent
Like empire’s hounds called to the hunt
The Coo-ee boys left for the front
Joined Captain Bill with drums and guns
To go and fight the Hun

Chorus
So come on boys, join us today
When the Coo-ee march comes through, don’t stay
We’ll jump the bags, go o’er the top, Berlin our next stop
With Captain Bill and his ragged band
We’ll spread the message through the land
Our country needs a helping hand
Coo-ee boys, come on…

The march came through, they all fell in
With caps pulled over cheeky grins,
Possessions slung across their backs
They marched along the Coo-ee track
In Sydney town the crowds all cheered
The boys joined up then disappeared
On steamers heading for the front
For victory and glory

Chorus

A hundred years have come and gone
Since the Coo-ee’s came through with their song
They wouldn’t know the old place now
If the boys came marching home
Trucks roar down the old main street
Where the Coo-ee’s marched with dusty feet
But sometimes you can hear it still
“Coo-ee, boys, come on… “

Chorus
So come on boys, join us today
When the Coo-ee march comes through, don’t stay
We’ll jump the bags, go o’er the top, Berlin our next stop
With Captain Bill and his ragged band
We’ll spread the message through the land
Our country needs a helping hand
Coo-ee boys, come on…
Our country needs a helping hand
Coo-ee boys, come on….
